Camp Kabbalah

Activities

Camp Kabbalah, part of the Lake Willoughby National Recreation Area, is the gateway to thousands of acres of wilderness containing uncountable natural wonders. These wonders begin right on the retreat's 160 acre property, including magnificent cliffs, ledges, boulder fields and outlooks all along our undulating, horseshoe-shaped ridge. Nestled at the base of the ridge, stretching out before the Lodge is our meadow with apple trees, wild berries and three ponds along its edge. There are brooks, boulder fields, lots of forest, trails, wildlife (deer, moose, big birds…,) mushrooms and more.

The wonders continue from Camp Kabbalah in every direction in the greatest variety of forms, animal, vegetable and mineral. These are all crowned by awe-inspiring Lake Willoughby and our big sky with its story-book clouds, stunning sunsets and, at night, filled with more stars than you've ever imagined.

Camp Kabbalah is on a mountaintop. Our horseshoe ridge, which is the crest of the mountain, forms a magnificent bowl, a protective nest which shelters and defines the balance of the property. Walk our ridge-top trail. Drink in the panoramic view from our main cliff (eighty feet high with a forty-foot cave-climb emerging from a hobbit hole half way up the cliff.) Climb Bald Mountain and experience the breath-taking vistas from its fire-tower. Then return to nature on a more human scale with the comforts of our lodge.

The land is magical. It is an acupuncture point on the Earth's meridians, a power spot. You can feel the healing energy. Call it feng shui or chi or biomagnetism or a sense of peacefulness. Physically and energetically the property of Camp Kabbalah is very unique. It is the site where the Abanake Native Americans made their last stand. It has understandably been called "the sweetest piece of land in Vermont." Ours is a jewel in the crown of Vermont's beauty. Think idyllic.

There is something for every inclination. Whether it's looking out the window, sitting in the meadow, floating in the pond or hiking Bald Mountain, nature surrounds, comforts and heals.

Morning, afternoon or all day excursions to captivating sites are experiences you'll never forget:
canoeing out to a secluded island to witness the nesting of the loons;
playing in the swirling waters of a stone-lined, bowl-shaped pool right were Echo Lake empties;
paddling through the twilight to the far side of Lake Willoughby to a campfire cookout;
performances at Bread And Puppet Theater and their museum/barn;
sunset from the Big Rock;
kayaking the Passumpsic or Clyde Rivers;
climbing majestic Mount Pisgah;
hiking through the woods to Jobs Pond to fish and camp for the night;
exploring the back roads and the quaint towns along the way
and more.

We are a secluded, gated facility. We are located past the dead end of a well-maintained dirt road, which is itself off of another dirt road, also surprisingly well-maintained. Our private road extends one half mile up from the gate. That's where Camp Kabbalah begins.

The Northeast Kingdom's world-class natural beauty attracts visitors from across the globe. Camp Kabbalah provides the ideal gateway to immerse in this at once spectacular and quaint country.

Bald Mountain itself is a friendly twenty-minute hike up the trail and another forty minutes to the top. It is the highest summit within a thirty mile radius. Breathtaking views, including Canada's Laurentian Mountains and the Presidential Mountains of New Hampshire, extend in 360 degrees from the fire-tower on its peak.

Nearby Lake Willoughby (2 hour hike or 4 mile drive,) Vermont's fourth largest and "most spectacular" lake has pure water and excellent beaches on its north and south ends. The cliffs of Mounts Pisgah and Hor plummet stupendously down to form its east and west shores, providing in the winter excellent ice-climbing. Short hikes or pleasant paddles lead to delightful sites. Underwater caves bring scuba divers from around the world.

Many other ponds, lakes, rivers and mountains lie within a hike or short drive.
